The Eferding Wind Reset

Christian Hasucha, August 2013

‘If a butterfly’s wings in Brazil can cause a tornado in Texas, what happens when a cubic metre of air is reset in Eferding?’

This was the key phrase in my proposal text and the jury of the Festivals of the Region commissioned me to carry out this project. I had thus reached my first goal with this sentence. Simultaneously it quoted within a widening scientific skepticism a widely accepted theorem of chaos theory, and also described the core of the then smooth, even enthusiastically executed Eferding action: the performance - and recognised by anyone and everyone as the surrogate for many human actions - of a sisyphus practice in opposition to the forces of nature that are only conceivable when calculated in strictly mathematical models.

Technical arrangement and modes of execution were quickly made clear. In the beginning, several interested parties were present at the ‘capture of the wind’. Over the course of the appropriate stages of the ‘reset’ (rather, ‘displacement), the interest shifted to wanting-to discuss-it, which, as I heard, was done widely and extensively.

What remained was to present the ‘release of the cubic metre of air in the prevailing weather conditions’ for as long and as figuratively as possible. We achieved that by fixing the flaps that had kept the air trapped in an open position with wire. The glass box became a kind of open air tunnel for a day.

As if it underlined the hubris aspect of the action, high water had flooded the areas around Eferding in the weeks before, which required very different forms of resetting natural elements in the settlement areas built by humans.
